New summer intern working on taxonomy of flies

June 10, 2010

By Katie Lyons

My research in summer 2010 focuses on revising the taxonomy of two genera of mydas-flies (Mydidae). Mydidae is a family of large flies with less than 500 species. Mydidae probably feed from flowers, although little else is known about them. They tend to inhabit harsh and arid environments where collection is difficult, and may only emerge for a few weeks out of the year. The two genera I am studying are represented by very few specimens.
